The Motus Story – Part Five: Further

Insights: a new series from the pen of moto-adventurer Neale Bayly.

#001 being locked away in Barber’s “vault” forever

In early October 2014, Motus co-founders Lee Conn and Brian Case once more steered a Motus van onto the beautiful, twisty parkway leading to the world famous Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. With one special MSTR strapped in the back, there was definitely a sense of déjà vu. Over the past six years, making this drive to the Barber Museum represented a series of high notes in the musical score of Motus history: introducing the original concept, unveiling the first prototypes, testing on the famous racetrack, and revealing the pre-production bikes at America’s largest vintage festival. All landmark moments in a journey from sketchpad to showroom floor for the Motus MST and MSTR.

Presenting #001 to Mr. Barber

Handing the key to the first production Motus, serial number 001, to Mr. Barber and rolling the bike into its place in motorcycle history, the struggles and sacrifices of the last six years briefly seemed to melt away. With an operational factory in downtown Birmingham, in the original historic building that once housed the Barber museum, the original vision was now reality: building and selling America’s first V4-powered sportbikes.

The joy of production, every week our bikes find new homes

Fast forward to Fall of 2017, having completed its third model year of MST production, Motus is shipping 2018’s to dealers around the US and, soon, around the globe. Each machine is meticulously built with humble pride, each is hand signed by the team. Each aluminum casting is poured by an expert foundryman, each frame is welded by a master craftsman, every panel is hand laid, every engine is blueprinted, hand assembled and tested.

Testing a naked prototype

New models are being developed, new markets are being explored and continuing to scale up is a new challenge. One that is being met with typical Motus grit and determination. Custom bike builders are embracing the platform and American V4® engines are shipped all over the world to power off-road vehicles, boats, and cars, too.

Owners gather at the 2017 Barber Vintage Festival

The greatest satisfaction for all the team at Motus is the feedback from the growing family of MST riders out riding and creating a vibrant community, making new friends and sharing satisfying adventures. As the family grows, everyone at Motus would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to the brand, the adventure, and the journey while looking forward to meeting and riding with you soon. Motus Meets Lamborghini Aventador

Here’s ANOTHER spectacular build from Motus Custom Ops, featuring a one of a kind factory-custom PPG tri-coat Lamborghini paint over a full carbon fiber body kit. The deep metallic-pearl yellow compliments the carefully selected raw carbon areas which adds another level of stunning beauty to the overall Motus design.

The stock 180hp American V4 MSTR wasn’t enough for this customer, who chose to order his new ride with a very specific custom paint direct from the design department at the factory in Birmingham, Alabama.

The MSTR comes equipped with carbon fiber BST – BlackStoneTek wheels, carbon fiber Akrapovic Exhaust SystemBremboÖhlins USAPirelliMoto Angel GT’s, Rizoma handlebars, Sargent Cycle Products seat, National Cycle windscreen and a LOT more.

Mike M’s Carbon Footprint.

Here’s a little photo album of a custom MSTR built for composites expert, Mike M. After inspecting the quality of the unpainted carbon fiber on every Motus MSTR, Mike wanted his Motus to tell the whole story in a unique way. We were happy to oblige.

Midwest Motorcyclist Rides the MSTR

It’s the kind of motorcycle best described by two words you won’t often read together: hooligan sport-tourer. It incorporates the comfortable seating position and body work of a sport-touring motorcycle but underneath that carbon fiber is a fire-breathing small-block V-4 that could put your operator’s license at risk. – Ray Peabody, Editor, December 2016

Bike Magazine rides the MST

“…their engine is as impressive as any I’ve tried in 25 years of road testing, a modern day hot-rod version of that sports touring classic, the VFR. It’s that good”- John Westlake, Bike Magazine

Two Wheel Obsession on-board ride review.

TwoWheelObsession on-board ride review. This reviewer did a great job detailing the features and ride quality of the MST…while riding! Ride starts at the 1:00 mark.

“It’s the most powerful streetbike you will ever ride, in a frame and weight configuration that fits bikes 1/2 its power. Think VMAX on steroids in a FZ09. No joke. Everything simply works – it’s refined and uses many automotive parts and features making it one of the most maintenance free bikes on the planet.”TwoWheelObsession, June 2016

Case’s bonkers custom MSTR- Lone Star 2

By day, Design Director Brian Case is tasked with building sensible, street legal bikes. So, when he snuck a 2015 MSTR out the back door and was left to his own diabolical devices, we suspected the gloves were off. Boy, were we right. Check out Case’s supercharged musclebike, Lone Star 2.

I started with a stock MSTR, stripped away as much as I could, then added a supercharger and a 4-2-1 tri-Y stainless exhaust.Brian Case

Features: 1650cc V4R Baby Block, supercharged, factory accessory 9.5:1 pistons, titanium valves, titanium fasteners, 4-2-1 tri-Y stainless steel exhaust headers, Akrapovic titanium GP slip-on muffler, Öhlins suspension, Brembo monoblocs, one-off 7-spoke BST carbon fiber wheels, Pirelli Angel GT tires. Estimated 230bhp.

“Sir” Alan Cathcart rides the MST & MSTR.

It’s always fun riding with “Sir” Alan Cathcart, and this time was no exception. Alan is a proper gentleman- until he dons his signature Union Jack helmet and Kushitani gear- then things get….spirited. His full ride report can be found by clicking the image below. Thanks Rider Magazine!

Sometimes the lilting burble from the twin exhausts makes the Motus MV4 engine sound like half-a-Chevy V8, other times there’s a fruitier crack more like twin twins, as in double Ducatis-but first, last and always it’s totally distinctive, and extremely entertaining when heard from the hot seat.  Alan Cathcart, Rider, May 2015

Preparation.

10559907_716367361732651_7064529694040635749_n Aug 21, 2014- Salt Lake City – altitude 4400ft, MSTR putting down 158rwhp 114 lbft torque. Next stop, Bonneville. Exciting for us at Motus to finally get to this point, with a very refined machine. Countless hours of engineering, testing, and production planning. Pure determination here at Motus, throttle wide open. Special thanks to Scott Horner of Heads up Performance and Dave Lindsay of Lindsay Machine Racing, LLC for the dyno time/expertise.

Motus featured in Cycle World’s “On The Menu”.

Grab the February edition of Cycle World and check out Mark Hoyer’s article “Sport-Touring On The Menu” where he highlights the Motus MST in reviewing several sport-tourers on the lighter, smaller end of the spectrum. The MST tips in above the quoted 500 lbs, but not by much.

“…our ride on a prototype was promising, and the engine sound was amazing. Ready-to-ride weight is said to be 500 pounds, which, with the ponies on tap, means the Motus should go like hell.”- Mark Hoyer, Cycle World, 2/14

Range.

286 miles from the 5.5 gallon tank. Lake Ponchatrain, LA to Cottondale, AL without stopping….

The American V4 exceeds expectations again as the benchmark was 250 miles/tank. The test riders behaved (with a few exceptions) and stuck to the scheduled test: all interstate, all at/below the posted speed limit.

68mph/2900 rpm average. 92-94 deg. ambient.

At 70mph, the MST spins 3000rpm and has 100+ ft lbs on tap…..there aren’t many sportbikes that can do that AND be comfortable for 4+ hrs straight.

One tester commented- “Glad to know the interstate range now, but next time can I just kick in $3.69 and buy the extra gallon so I can get back a LOT quicker?”
